CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland Metropolitan School District has reached a tentative agreement with the Cleveland Teachers Union.
Ahead of the June 30, 2024, expiration of the current collective bargaining agreement, CMSD and CTU have agreed on a tentative new contract, the school district and the union said in a news release Tuesday.
Shari Obrenski, president of CTU, said that the deal aimed to show respect to union members while helping to retain and recruit educators for Cleveland’s children.
Warren Morgan, CEO of the school district, said it wanted to ensure “stability and foster a supportive environment or members of our teacher’s union, paraprofessionals, and nurses, we enhance our ability to provide quality education to the children of Cleveland.”
The tentative agreement is set to be shared with the Board of Education and CTU members by the end of the week, with both parties expected to approve or reject it during the week of May 13.
The agreement comes amid the school district dealing with budget issues. Morgan earlier this year rolled out the first stages of a plan to trim $168 million from the district budget over the next two years to keep the school system in the black.
Morgan at the time noted the school system will no longer have the help of what amounted to $465 million in federal stimulus money made available during the COVID-19 pandemic.
